Dublin is a city where a lot can happen within a relatively small area. A morning meeting can be followed by lunch beside the canal, an appointment on the way back to the office and a few jobs ticked off the list before heading home.
That mix is particularly noticeable in areas such as Grand Canal Dock, Ballsbridge and Charlemont, where offices and residential neighbourhoods sit alongside cafés, restaurants, parks and an enormous variety of local services.
So, rather than planning the perfect tourist day in Dublin, here’s a slightly more realistic one – good coffee, great food and perhaps even getting something useful done along the way.
Start With Coffee and a Walk
Dublin’s coffee scene has changed enormously over the years, and you rarely have to walk far to find a good independent café.
Pick up a coffee and explore the Docklands, walk along the Grand Canal or take a detour through Herbert Park if you’re around Ballsbridge. These areas are busiest during the working week, but step away from the main streets and you’ll find plenty of quieter corners too.
They’re also neighbourhoods where you can conveniently combine a day in the office with everyday appointments. Pharmacies, dentists, gyms and opticians in Dublin are often within walking distance of major workplaces, making it much easier to fit an appointment around the working day.
Make Time for a Proper Lunch
However productive the morning has been, lunch deserves its own place in the schedule.
At CARVED, we think a great sandwich should be more than something grabbed because you’re short on time. Our sandwiches are made by chefs using quality ingredients, with choices ranging from beef brisket and Cajun chicken to glazed ham, buffalo chicken and vegetarian favourites.
You’ll find CARVED in Grand Canal Dock, Ballsbridge and Charlemont Square, so whether you’re working nearby or exploring another part of Dublin, there’s a good chance we’re not far away.
And when lunch involves the whole office, things get even easier. CARVED catering includes sandwich platters, salads, soups and sides for meetings, team lunches and corporate events across Dublin.
Give Yourself an Afternoon Reset
After lunch, you could head straight back to the laptop. Or you could take advantage of some of the health and wellbeing options that have appeared throughout Dublin in recent years.
Alongside traditional gyms, swimming pools and spa breaks, the city now has yoga studios, Pilates classes, massage therapists and specialist wellness clinics. There’s also growing interest in treatments such as acupuncture in Dublin for people interested in exploring complementary approaches to health and wellbeing.
Even something much simpler can help break up a busy day. A twenty-minute walk along the canal or through one of Dublin’s parks is free, requires no appointment and can be a welcome change after several hours at a desk.
The Less Exciting – But Useful – Stuff
Living and working in a city isn’t all lunches and coffee.
Sometimes the most satisfying part of the day is finally dealing with something that’s been sitting on your to-do list for weeks.
Dublin has a huge professional services community, so finding accountants in Dublin for business or tax matters or solicitors in Dublin when you need legal advice doesn’t necessarily mean travelling across the county. Many firms are concentrated around the city centre and surrounding business districts.
For business owners, having those services nearby can be particularly useful. A lunchtime meeting with an accountant or solicitor is considerably easier when everyone is based within a few kilometres of one another.
And Then There Are the Jobs Waiting at Home
Of course, the to-do list doesn’t always end when you leave the office.
Dublin’s residential neighbourhoods are supported by an equally varied network of trades and home-service businesses. From electricians and plumbers to painters, gardeners and carpenters in Dublin, there’s usually someone specialising in whatever project you’ve been postponing.
The same applies to those smaller maintenance jobs that have a habit of becoming noticeable at exactly the wrong time. Gutter cleaning, power washing and professional window cleaners in Dublin can all save a Saturday that might otherwise disappear into household chores.
It’s easy to overlook these businesses when thinking about what makes a city enjoyable to live in, but they’re every bit as much a part of Dublin as its restaurants, cafés and shops.
Finish Somewhere You Enjoy
Once the appointments, meetings and errands are done, Dublin becomes a different city again.
Grand Canal Dock has plenty of places for an after-work drink or dinner by the water. From Ballsbridge, you can wander towards Herbert Park or stay around the neighbourhood’s pubs and restaurants. Charlemont puts Camden Street, Portobello and the city centre within easy walking distance.
And that’s really the appeal of spending a day in Dublin. You don’t necessarily need an elaborate itinerary. Some of the best days are simply a mixture of getting things done and finding good places along the way.
At CARVED, we’re happy to take care of the lunch part. Drop into Ballsbridge, Grand Canal Dock or Charlemont Square for a chef-made sandwich, or order CARVED catering for your next office lunch, meeting or event.
